After half a day of walking down south from shinsaibashi, we took a break at this coffee house. Serving mainly locals, gf n I wrote our name down on the waiting list. The jap words in next column indicate table, counter or no preference. 10min later, we got our table. Ordered a pancake and drink set and add on 60 yen for their roasted coffee. Gf ordered a cold drink. Food arrived about 10min later. Drinks are good, tho the texture of the pancakes are a little rough, perhaps due to the thickness. Taste wise, the beans, matcha ice cream, all good. Service is par jap standards. Good coffee, good break. All in at 2260yen.
For any Americans traveling in Osaka who are missing a taste of home, epically diners, this is a great spot for coffee and pancakes. Their pancakes are thick, flavorful, bready, and incredibly fluffy. The thin crust gives the pancake an extra kick. They also offer a variety choice of coffee.
The food still tastes the same, but the service definitely needs improvement. We accidentally left our things there and went back the next morning, but the staff couldn't understand English and weren't very helpful. We returned in the evening—since that matched the time we had dinner the night before—and managed to find the exact staff member who had served us. After a long explanation, she told us she had handed our belongings over to the customer service counter. We rushed over there, and the three girls at the counter told us they were just waiting for a staff member to bring our items back to us. This was our experience here.
Breakfast set (¥790) — tuna & corn sandwich + drink. Unfortunately the bread was over-toasted with charred edges. I first thought that’s the standard here, but I checked other tables and mine was the only one burnt. That was disappointing and a bit concerning health-wise. Drink was fine, but the quality control needs work, so the value felt lower. Suggestion: Please check toast level before serving and remake burnt items. I’d be happy to return if this improves.
This actual Kohikan itself is nice, but the menu doesn’t have my favourite Kohikan drink (and is definitely more limited than my local Kohikan’s) so I can’t give it 5/5. So if you’re after the cafe au lait with matcha and the ball of cream this isn’t the location for you! However, I’ve been here twice and had delicious desserts each time (the classic coffee jelly and a seasonal fruit parfait). The service and desserts were great, delicious and presentation was perfect.
